We talk about, at least implicitly, empowering people to make a difference as individuals.

A role model for this:
http://www.badassoftheweek.com/aki-ra.html

Aki Ra is a Cambodian man. Since 1994, he's removed ~50,000 landmines in his home country of Cambodia, which has both helped tourism (it's safe to walk near the Ankor Wat temples again) and reopened everything from playgrounds to farms that had been too dangerous to use.
He's done this with a high-tech kit which includes a pocketknife, screwdriver, and a stick.
Read and be impressed.

He... he's personally defused enough land mines to build miniature structures out of them. Yeah, like sand castles. The sections appear to be color-coded.

I like to think that I have a good handle on awe-inspiring bravery, willpower, and human potential, and then something like this shatters all the standards I held, leaving me blind and senseless.

Wow.
